The company THERMOINDUSTRIA, working in the field of heating, cooling, ventilation and water supply, launched a new project “School of pupils” in January.
HRhub.ge talked about the idea and the progress of the project to HR manager Mariam Tatkhashvili.
HR hub: Mariam, tell us about the project, what was the main challenge that prompted the company to create a new project?
I personally joined the THERMOINDUSTRIA team a year ago. The company has a young leadership team and they annually carry out many interesting projects. Last year, a KPI system was implemented, in which one of the evaluation criteria for the management members is the projects precisely. One of the projects by which the leader of our technical direction and me are directly evaluated, is the “School of pupils”.
The technical field is an innovation and a big challenge for me to this day. We face special difficulties when choosing technical personnel. In this sphere, we are not too indulged by the high trust and professionalism of technical specialists. The personnel, who are well versed in their own business, work either independently, take private orders, or offer the company their candidacy at a price higher than the real one. In view of these difficulties, we decided to look for and grow motivated youth interested in neighboring sphere and launched the project “School of pupils”.
The main challenge was that some schools did not fully understand the significance of the project, some of them could not even interest the students and appoint meeting with them.
At the first stage we wanted to give a chance to all students, their selection did not happen, we were ready to share our experience for the whole group, however, most students did not understand how they could achieve success with the help of the project, some of them missed lectures, their attitude was unacceptable, accordingly, we decided to take the students of the “School of pupils” only on the basis of an interview, and this approach proved itself.
HR hub: What does the program mean in detail?
To implement the program at the first stage we have found the full base of universities and professional institutions in Georgia, the interesting directions (heating-air conditioning, electricity, construction, etc.) were underlined, the head of the technical direction of our company and me planned a meeting with the representatives of the indicated educational institutions, we had a program, a syllabus and tried to demonstrate our goals clearly and attractively to educational institutions. In most cases, the interest was mutual and we agreed on cooperation. Currently, the program includes 4 groups (staffed by students of the College “Spektri” and the Agrarian University).
In the fields of the program the senior manager of technical support of the company THERMOINDUSTRIA with the help of technical service managers leads a 6-week course, which includes a practical and theoretical part. Students have the opportunity to have two kinds of practice – in the first case they can test all kinds of artificial damage and learn how to resolve them at the place in the laboratory of THERMOINDUSTRIA, in the second case they can together with our installation and service groups go to objects and get practical experience.
Students of the “School of pupils” are developing in different directions – installation, repair, design of heating systems. Based on their greatest interest in any direction and showing the best results, they will be considered for this particular position.
This project is quite different because we offer students to share professionals’ experience free of charge, at the expense of the company and set the prospect of employment. All students who will successfully complete the course and receive high marks in the final exam have a chance to join our installation team and get paid work.
As for the lecture period, it includes two days a week, lectures last for 2.5 hours. The time of lectures is maximally convenient for students, at any day of the week that they wish.
HR hub: Who can join the program?
All those people who are interested in heating, air-conditioning, ventilation and water supply, who have even minimal knowledge / experience in this area or are very motivated and understand the importance of this project for their development.
For us, the main criterion for selecting candidates is their motivation.
Throughout this year we constantly have several groups, respectively we personally will meet to any interested person and consider him/her as our student with pleasure.
HR hub: How long has the project been started? What are the results / expectations?
The project had a 2-month preparatory period, as for the beginning of the lecture course, the lectures are being held since January 29. At present, we already have the first results, from our first group, which was staffed by 9 students, on the basis of the manager’s assessment 7 of them were selected, all seven students were assigned to installation groups and together with the group started to work. Now it is up to the students themselves how many of them will be able to work and earn money until the end.
At this stage it is difficult to talk about larger results, the remaining three groups are at the theoretical training stage, although the interest in this project is very high, we already have several groups that will join us in April, we have many plans and great expectations, we plan in the future expansion of the scope and training in broader areas, but we still have to work on this project ourselves.
